Quartz sand is a non-metallic mineral raw material produced from natural quartz rock through processing techniques such as crushing, screening, and purification; its primary component is silicon dioxide (SiO₂). Typically appearing as a milky white or colorless, semi-transparent substance, it is characterized by a Mohs hardness of 7, a high melting point, chemical stability, and resistance to abrasion and corrosion. Depending on its purity and processing method, quartz sand is classified into various types—including ordinary quartz sand, refined quartz sand, high-purity quartz sand, fused quartz sand, and silica powder—and is widely utilized in industries such as glass, foundry, ceramics, refractory materials, water treatment, chemicals, plastics, and rubber, as well as in high-tech sectors (such as photovoltaics, semiconductors, and fiber-optic communications).

Ordinary quartz sand is used in the manufacture of flat glass, daily-use glassware, and similar products; refined quartz sand is utilized in the production of optical glass and instrument glass; meanwhile, high-purity quartz sand (low-iron quartz sand) is employed in the manufacture of photovoltaic glass (ultra-clear glass) and photovoltaic crucibles, serving as a critical raw material for the photovoltaic industry.
It constitutes a primary raw material for molding sand in the foundry industry, used to create sand molds and cores; it is characterized by its high-temperature resistance, high strength, and excellent permeability. In the refractories industry, quartz sand is used to manufacture silica bricks, lightweight silica bricks, and similar products, leveraging its high refractoriness and acid resistance.
Ordinary quartz sand is frequently used in wastewater treatment, while refined quartz sand is commonly employed in the pretreatment stages of pure water production.
In fields such as electronic information, semiconductors, and fiber-optic communications, it is used to manufacture semiconductor chips, optical fiber preforms, quartz glass fibers, optical lenses, and specialized light sources—applications that impose extremely stringent requirements regarding purity and impurity levels.
