Tetrabutyl titanate, with the chemical formula Ti(OC₄H₉)₄, is an organotitanium compound that appears as a colorless to pale yellow viscous liquid at room temperature. As an important organometallic compound, tetrabutyl titanate exhibits high chemical activity, particularly sensitivity to moisture. It undergoes a vigorous hydrolysis reaction upon contact with water, producing titanium dioxide and butanol.

Tetrabutyl titanate has wide applications in materials science and industrial production. It is a key precursor for the sol-gel method in the preparation of nano-ceramic materials and is commonly used to synthesize high-performance ceramics such as nano-titanium dioxide and barium titanate.1 Furthermore, it can be used as a highly efficient catalyst for transesterification reactions, and as a crosslinking agent and adhesion promoter in coatings and adhesives, significantly improving the heat resistance and durability of products.

Function

Butyl titanate is a key precursor for the sol-gel method in the preparation of ceramic materials. It can be mixed with other metal alkoxides or metal salts, hydrolyzed and polycondensed to form a gel, and then dried and calcined to obtain a dense ceramic coating or powder.

In the field of nanomaterials, butyl titanate is widely used to prepare nano-titanium dioxide (TiO₂) particles, films, and nanotubes. These nanomaterials possess unique photocatalytic properties and ultraviolet shielding capabilities, and are widely used in air purification, antibacterial materials, and cosmetics. Furthermore, it is used to synthesize ferroelectric ceramic materials such as barium titanate (BaTiO₃), which are important raw materials for manufacturing capacitors and piezoelectric components.

In the coatings and adhesives industry, butyl titanate plays an important role as a highly efficient crosslinking agent and adhesion promoter. It can react with hydroxyl groups on the surface of substrates such as glass and metals to form strong chemical bonds, thereby significantly improving the adhesion of the coating to the substrate. Simultaneously, it can improve the weather resistance and heat resistance of the coating, ensuring its stability under harsh environments.

In the field of organic synthesis, tetrabutyl titanate can be used as a Lewis acid catalyst for reactions such as transesterification, polyester synthesis, and esterification. It effectively lowers the activation energy of the reaction, increases the reaction rate and yield, and is typically used in small quantities, exhibiting high efficiency and environmental friendliness.
