Silicon dioxide (SiO₂) is an acidic oxide, a solid at room temperature.

Silicon dioxide is insoluble in water and acids, but soluble in hydrofluoric acid and hot concentrated phosphoric acid. It reacts with molten alkalis. Silicon dioxide has a wide range of applications, primarily in the manufacture of glass, water glass, ceramics, and enamel. Pure, natural silicon dioxide crystals are hard, brittle, insoluble, colorless, and transparent solids, commonly used in the manufacture of optical instruments.

Function

Silica is used in the manufacture of flat glass, glass products, foundry sand, glass fibers, ceramic glazes, rust-preventing sandblasting, filter sand, fluxes, refractory materials, and lightweight aerated concrete. Its applications are wide-ranging. Relatively rare crystals in nature are used to manufacture important components for the electronics industry, optical instruments, and handicrafts. Silica is an important raw material for manufacturing optical fibers. Generally, relatively pure quartz can be used to manufacture quartz glass. Quartz glass has a very small coefficient of thermal expansion, approximately 1/18 that of ordinary glass, can withstand rapid temperature changes, and has good acid resistance (except for HF). Therefore, quartz glass is often used to manufacture high-temperature resistant chemical instruments. Quartz sand is commonly used as a glass raw material and building material.

Silica is a raw material for manufacturing glass, quartz glass, water glass, optical fibers, important components for the electronics industry, optical instruments, handicrafts, and refractory materials, and is an important material for scientific research.

When silicon dioxide crystallizes perfectly, it becomes quartz; when it gels and dehydrates, it becomes agate; when hydrated silica colloids solidify, they become opal; when silica grains are smaller than a few micrometers, they form chalcedony, flint, and secondary quartzite. Quartz is a mineral resource with very stable physical and chemical properties. Its crystals belong to the trigonal crystal system, specifically low-temperature quartz (α-quartz), and it is the most widely distributed mineral in the quartz group. In a broader sense, quartz also includes high-temperature quartz (β-quartz). Quartz blocks, also known as silica, are mainly used as raw materials for producing quartz sand (also called silica sand), and are also used in quartz refractories and the firing of ferrosilicon.

In the food industry, it is used as an anti-caking agent, defoamer, thickener, filter aid, and clarifying agent.
