On June 27, Evonik opened a new fumed silica production plant at its Rheinfelden, Germany, site.
The new plant, primarily used to produce the AEROSIL® line of high-quality silica products, features a system specifically designed for the production of AEROSIL Easy-to-Disperse (E2D) grades. This technology simplifies the incorporation of silica as a rheology additive into coatings formulations.

The capacity expansion in Rheinfelden strengthens Evonik’s global supply of high-quality silica.
Dr. Stefan Fiedler, Head of the AEROSIL® Operations Group in Rheinfelden, said that the commissioning of AEROSIL® E2D technology demonstrates Evonik’s commitment to the development of the Rheinfelden site. Evonik has been successfully producing fumed silica here for decades, which not only ensures quality but also increases the global supply of Evonik’s products.

AEROSIL® easy dispersibility makes coatings formulation easier, faster, and more sustainable. AEROSIL® E2D fumed silica products offer excellent dispersibility, streamlining coating manufacturing processes and increasing efficiency. Traditionally, dispersing rheology additives like fumed silica is an energy-intensive and time-consuming process. AEROSIL® E2D technology streamlines this step into a single operation.
Dr. Oliver Kroehl, Head of Silica at Evonik’s Coating Additives division, emphasized the advantages of this technology, saying, “AEROSIL® E2D products help customers improve process efficiency and optimize end-product properties. For Evonik’s customers, the key benefit is the faster dispersion of silica, which significantly saves time, energy, and costs, and therefore reduces CO2 emissions. This enables customers to develop more advanced and sustainable coating solutions.”
The new plant in Rheinfelden is part of Evonik’s ongoing investment in coatings and ink additives, with a particular focus on developing environmentally friendly and sustainable products. Evonik’s Coating Additives business line offers a wide range of specialty additives for coatings and printing inks. The business has decades of experience developing products for a range of coatings markets, including decorative coatings, industrial coatings, automotive coatings, and printing inks.
