n-Octyltriethoxysilane, with the chemical formula C₁₄H₃₂O₃Si, is an important organosilane coupling agent. Its molecular structure contains a hydrophilic triethoxysilane group and a hydrophobic n-octyl long-chain alkyl group. At room temperature, it is a colorless and transparent liquid with good chemical stability and weather resistance, and is soluble in a variety of organic solvents.
As a monofunctional silane coupling agent, n-octyltriethoxysilane is mainly used to improve the interfacial bonding between inorganic materials and organic polymers. In the rubber industry, it is often used as a surface modifier for inorganic fillers (such as silica), effectively reducing the viscosity of the filler, improving the processing performance of rubber mixtures, and significantly enhancing the mechanical strength and aging resistance of composite materials. In the pigment industry, it is used to treat inorganic pigments (such as titanium dioxide and calcium carbonate), altering their surface polarity to make them easier to disperse in organic media, thereby improving the pigment’s gloss and application performance.
In the textile industry, this substance is used for finishing textiles, giving fabrics excellent water-repellent, oil-repellent, and stain-resistant properties, and is commonly used in the finishing of outdoor clothing and furniture fabrics.
