Tungsten disulfide (WS₂) is an inorganic compound composed of tungsten and sulfur. It typically appears as a blackish-gray powder with a graphite-like layered crystal structure. The layers are connected by weak intermolecular forces, resulting in an extremely low coefficient of friction, making it a high-performance solid lubricant, particularly suitable for extreme environments such as high temperature, high pressure, and high vacuum. Besides lubrication applications, tungsten disulfide also exhibits semiconductor properties, antimagnetic properties, and good catalytic activity, and is widely used in cutting-edge fields such as lithium-ion batteries, petrochemical catalysis, and nanoelectronic devices (e.g., field-effect transistors).

Function

Tungsten disulfide is widely used for lubrication of mechanical equipment in high-temperature, high-pressure, high-vacuum, high-load, and highly corrosive environments. It is commonly found in aerospace components, critical parts of automotive engines, and industrial applications such as die stamping, effectively reducing wear and extending equipment life.

In lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries, it is often used as an additive to electrode materials or as a negative electrode material. The addition of tungsten disulfide can significantly improve the energy density, rate performance, and cycle stability of batteries, solving the problem of poor rate performance of traditional electrode materials.

In the petrochemical industry, tungsten disulfide is mainly used as a catalyst. Its unique layered structure provides abundant active sites, enabling it to exhibit high catalytic activity, long service life, and good thermal stability in reactions such as hydrogenation, desulfurization, and cracking.

Two-dimensional tungsten disulfide possesses unique optoelectronic properties, making it a key material for constructing next-generation nanoelectronic devices. It can be used to fabricate high-performance field-effect transistors (FETs) with high carrier mobility and a large on/off ratio, contributing to the realization of smaller, higher-speed integrated circuits. Furthermore, tungsten disulfide can also be used in cutting-edge electronic information fields such as photodetectors, photocatalysts (e.g., for degrading organic pollutants), and non-volatile memories.
