Polyglycolic acid (PGA), also known as polyglycolic acid or polyhydroxyacetic acid, is an aliphatic polyester polymer with the fewest carbon units, a completely biodegradable ester structure, and the fastest degradation rate. Its simple chemical structure, with repeating units containing only two carbon atoms, endows it with excellent biocompatibility, mechanical strength, and heat resistance. PGA’s final degradation products are carbon dioxide and water, which are non-toxic and harmless to the environment. It has been certified as a safe biodegradable plastic material in the United States, the European Union, Japan, and other countries.

As a revolutionary biodegradable material, PGA has broad application prospects in the biomedical field (such as surgical sutures and drug carriers) and the environmental protection field (such as packaging materials that replace traditional plastics and agricultural mulch films). Especially in addressing the problem of “white pollution,” PGA is considered a highly promising environmentally friendly material due to its rapid degradation even in marine environments. Currently, with breakthroughs in coal-based synthesis processes, China is actively promoting the industrialization of PGA to reduce costs and expand its application scale.

Function

PGA can be hydrolyzed into glycolic acid in the body, participating in human metabolism. Therefore, it is widely used in the manufacture of absorbable surgical sutures, orthopedic fixation nails/plates, drug delivery systems, and tissue engineering scaffolds.

In the fields of environmentally friendly packaging and agriculture, PGA’s high barrier properties and heat resistance can be used to produce carbonated beverage bottles, beer bottles, and high-temperature resistant food packaging films. PGA mulch films degrade rapidly in the soil after use, requiring no recycling and effectively avoiding the “white pollution” caused by traditional plastic mulch films.

In oil and gas extraction, PGA is used as a biodegradable temporary plugging agent, fracturing balls, and bridge plugs. These components degrade automatically after operation, eliminating the need for drilling, thus improving operational efficiency and reducing damage to the formation.
