Ambroxide, chemically known as (-)-3a,6,6,9a-tetramethyl dodecahydronaphtho[2,1-b]furan, is a synthetic fragrance widely used in cosmetics, food, and tobacco industries. It is a key active component of natural ambergris, possessing a soft, long-lasting, and stable animalic ambergris scent with a mild woody undertone. Due to the scarcity of natural ambergris and the protected status of sperm whales, ambroxide has become its most important synthetic substitute since the 1950s.
