Bisphenol A, also known as BPA, is an industrial chemical used to synthesize materials such as polycarbonate (PC) and epoxy resins. Since the 1960s, it has been used in the manufacture of plastic bottles (including baby bottles), toddler sippy cups, and the internal linings of food and beverage containers (such as those for infant formula). BPA is ubiquitous, found in everything from mineral water bottles and medical devices to the linings of food packaging. Globally, 27 million tons of BPA-containing plastics are produced annually. However, BPA can disrupt the endocrine system and poses health risks to fetuses and children; it has also been linked to cancer and obesity resulting from metabolic disorders. The European Union determined that BPA-containing baby bottles could trigger precocious puberty and, effective March 2, 2011, banned the production of baby bottles containing the chemical.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is one of the most widely used industrial compounds in the world, primarily employed in the production of various polymer materials such as polycarbonate, epoxy resins, polysulfone resins, polyphenylene ether resins, and unsaturated polyester resins. It is also used to manufacture fine chemical products, including plasticizers, flame retardants, antioxidants, heat stabilizers, rubber anti-aging agents, pesticides, and coatings.

In the manufacturing of plastic products, the addition of BPA imparts properties such as colorless transparency, durability, lightness, and outstanding impact resistance. Notably, it prevents acidic vegetables and fruits from corroding metal containers from the inside; consequently, it is widely used in the production of packaging for canned foods and beverages, baby bottles, water bottles, dental sealants, eyeglass lenses, and hundreds of other everyday items.
