Didecyl dimethyl ammonium chloride (DDAC) is a double-chain quaternary ammonium salt cationic surfactant. It is a pale yellow, transparent liquid at room temperature, readily soluble in water and organic solvents, and exhibits good chemical stability and broad-spectrum bactericidal activity. As a third- or fourth-generation quaternary ammonium salt disinfectant, its bactericidal efficacy is significantly superior to traditional single-chain quaternary ammonium salts (such as benzalkonium chloride). It is commonly used in medical and health fields, industrial circulating water treatment, agricultural aquaculture, and personal care products. This substance is effective against Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria, and various viruses. However, care should be taken to avoid mixing it with anionic surfactants, and its potential toxicity to aquatic organisms should be monitored.

In the medical field, dialcdimethylammonium chloride is widely used for disinfection in hospital environments, including soaking and cleaning medical devices, catheters, and laboratory equipment, as well as wiping and disinfecting hospital surfaces. Because it does not corrode or damage metals, plastics, or rubber, and has low irritation, it is also suitable for skin and mucous membrane disinfection and surgical handwashing. Furthermore, it can be used for cleaning and disinfection of central air conditioning systems and laminar flow purification facilities.
In industrial water treatment, dialcdimethylammonium chloride is a highly effective bactericide and algaecide, commonly used in oilfield water injection systems and industrial circulating cooling water systems to control microbial growth and biofilm formation. In wood preservation, it has an affinity for wood and can be fixed to wood through cation exchange, serving as a wood preservative and anti-discoloration agent, especially suitable for applications involving contact with the ground.
In agriculture and animal husbandry, this substance can be used for hygienic disinfection of livestock sheds, sterilization of poultry egg surfaces, and algae control in aquaculture. It can also be used for mothproofing wool fabrics and controlling insect diseases. In personal care products, it is often added as a preservative synergist or antibacterial ingredient to wipes and toiletries.
In the daily chemical industry, diecryldimethylammonium chloride, due to its mild bactericidal properties, is commonly used in household disinfectants, hand sanitizers, and disinfectant sprays. In the textile printing and dyeing industry, it can be used as a softener and antistatic agent, providing softening, antistatic, and anti-yellowing properties, with good results in small amounts.
