Erucamide, chemically known as (Z)-13-docosenamide, is a long-chain unsaturated fatty acid amide. Typically produced through the reaction of erucic acid with ammonia, it appears as a white crystalline solid or powder and exhibits excellent thermal stability, slip properties, and anti-blocking characteristics. As a significant fine chemical additive, erucamide is widely used in industries such as plastics, rubber, inks, and coatings. In plastics processing, it serves primarily as a slip agent, anti-blocking agent, and mold release agent; it effectively reduces the coefficient of friction on film surfaces, prevents film adhesion, and enhances packaging efficiency. Additionally, it can be used in inks to improve printing performance or in rubber applications as a mold release agent. Because it is derived from renewable vegetable oils (such as rapeseed oil), erucamide is considered an environmentally friendly, “green” chemical product.

Function

Plastic processing is the primary application area for erucamide. It is widely used as a slip agent and anti-blocking agent for plastic films made from materials such as polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polyvinyl chloride (PVC). When added to films—such as low-density polyethylene (LDPE), linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE), and biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP)—at typical concentrations of 0.05% to 0.3%, erucamide significantly reduces the coefficient of friction and increases packaging machine operating speeds. In engineering plastic processing, it serves as a lubricant and mold release agent, enhancing the surface finish of the final products. Additionally, in masterbatch production, erucamide acts as a dispersant and lubricant, facilitating pigment dispersion and improving melt flow.

In inks and coatings, erucamide primarily functions to improve leveling, slip properties, and anti-blocking characteristics. It prevents ink buildup on screens or rollers during printing and enhances the abrasion and scratch resistance of printed materials. In paper coating applications, it improves the penetration of paraffin wax and resins, resulting in a smoother coating surface.

In the rubber industry, erucamide serves as a mold release agent and surface treatment agent, improving the gloss and stain resistance of rubber products. Furthermore, it finds application as a lubricant for metal wire drawing, a pigment dispersant, and a fiber processing aid.
