The molecular structure of Crystal Violet Lactone features a pivotal lactone ring, which endows it with distinct chemical characteristics. When subjected to specific external stimuli—such as exposure to acidic substances, heat, or light—this lactone ring undergoes a ring-opening reaction, giving rise to a planar, highly conjugated system. This structural transformation enables the molecule to absorb visible light, thereby manifesting a vivid blue-violet hue. Leveraging this property, Crystal Violet Lactone is widely utilized in the manufacture of carbonless copy paper and thermal paper, while also playing a significant role in fields such as biological staining, anti-counterfeit inks, and smart materials.

Crystal Violet Lactone (CVL) is a core material in the manufacture of carbonless copy paper (pressure-sensitive paper) and thermal paper. In carbonless copy paper, CVL is encapsulated within microcapsules located on the back side of the paper (the CB sheet). When writing or printing occurs, external pressure ruptures these microcapsules; the released CVL flows out and comes into contact with a color developer (such as activated clay or zinc salicylate) situated on the front side (the CF sheet). Under acidic conditions, a color-forming reaction takes place, generating clear blue-violet text or images and thereby enabling the copying function. In thermal paper, CVL is mixed with color developers—such as Bisphenol A—and solvents, and is coated onto the paper’s surface. Utilizing the heat generated by a print head, the CVL undergoes a heat-induced ring-opening reaction to produce color, thereby enabling rapid printing.

In the field of biology, Crystal Violet Lactone (often referred to simply as Crystal Violet) is widely employed as a staining agent. In the Gram staining method, it serves as the primary stain, binding to the peptidoglycans found within bacterial cell walls. Because Gram-positive bacteria possess thicker cell walls, the resulting CV+ ion complexes are resistant to elution by ethanol, thereby retaining their purple coloration; conversely, Gram-negative bacteria are decolorized, allowing for the differentiation between these two types of bacteria.

By harnessing the photochromic and thermochromic properties of CVL, high-performance anti-counterfeiting inks and smart materials can be developed. For instance, by coordinating CVL derivatives with specific counterions, the response rate of photochromic reactions can be precisely controlled. Through exposure to ultraviolet light, hidden information can be made to appear or disappear, thereby enabling multi-level information encryption and anti-counterfeiting authentication.
