Glassy carbon is commonly used to make glassy carbon electrodes, rotating disk glassy carbon electrodes, magnetic glassy carbon electrodes, and electron microscope glassy carbon electrodes.

It is one of the most widely used working electrodes, offering stable electrochemical performance. It can be used directly as an inert electrode for anodic stripping, cathodic and variable valence ion voltammetric determinations, and can also serve as an electrochemically modified electrode.
