Polymethylsiloxane—often referred to as Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)—is a silicone polymer characterized by a backbone consisting of repeating silicon-oxygen (Si-O-Si) linkages, with methyl groups (-CH3) directly bonded to the silicon atoms. As the most widely produced and extensively applied class of silicone materials, polymethylsiloxane combines the thermal stability of inorganic materials with the processability of organic materials. It possesses a range of exceptional properties, including resistance to extreme temperatures, electrical insulation capabilities, weather resistance, hydrophobicity, physiological inertness, and low surface tension.

Depending on its molecular weight and degree of cross-linking, polymethylsiloxane can exist at room temperature in three physical forms: liquid (silicone oil), elastomeric (silicone rubber), or resinous (silicone resin). Consequently, it finds widespread application across various sectors, including electronics and electrical engineering, daily chemical products, healthcare, construction, textiles, and food processing.

Function

In the electronics industry, polymethylsiloxane is primarily utilized as an insulating material and a thermally conductive material. Silicone oil serves as an insulating fluid for transformers and capacitors; silicone rubber is employed for the potting, protection, and sealing of electronic components, providing moisture resistance, vibration damping, and electrical insulation; and high-purity silicone resins are used as high-temperature-resistant insulating varnishes.

In the field of daily chemical products, polymethylsiloxane is a key ingredient in cosmetics and personal care products. Possessing excellent lubricity, a smooth tactile feel, and water-repellent properties, it is widely incorporated into skincare, makeup, and hair care products to enhance their application performance and sensory feel.

In the medical sector, high-purity polymethylsiloxane is utilized in the manufacture of medical devices, drug delivery carriers, and medical antifoaming agents, owing to its exceptional biocompatibility.

In industrial applications, polymethylsiloxane primarily functions as a lubricant, mold release agent, antifoaming agent, and waterproofing agent.

In plastic and rubber molding processes, it acts as a mold release agent, ensuring a smooth surface finish for the finished products;

In textile printing and dyeing, it serves as a softener, imparting a soft texture to fibers;

In metalworking, it functions as a high-temperature heat transfer fluid;

In food processing, it acts as an antifoaming agent, preventing foam overflow during fermentation processes.
