Linalool is an acyclic monoterpene alcohol. It is a colorless, transparent, oily liquid characterized by a lily-of-the-valley-like floral fragrance, accompanied by woody and fruity undertones; it is one of the most widely distributed fragrance components found in nature. Linalool is abundantly present in the essential oils of over 200 plant species—including rosewood, lavender, rosewood, and coriander seed oils—and also serves as a primary constituent of the aroma of green tea.

Widely used in perfumes, soaps, detergents, cosmetics, and skincare products. It frequently serves as a “top note” ingredient, imparting a fresh, diffusive floral scent to products; it is commonly employed in formulating floral fragrances—such as lily, lilac, lily of the valley, and orange blossom—as well as green fragrances like lavender and bergamot.
In oral care products such as toothpaste and mouthwash, linalool is also frequently utilized as a fragrance agent.
Synthetic Intermediate: It serves as a crucial raw material for the synthesis of Vitamin E, Vitamin A, Vitamin K, beta-carotene, and anti-cancer drugs such as xysmalobin lactone.
Pharmacological Activity: It exhibits sedative, hypnotic, anxiolytic, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-tumor properties. Research indicates that linalool inhibits the release of inflammatory mediators, exerts neuroprotective effects, and demonstrates inhibitory activity against various bacteria and fungi.
Oral Care: It possesses anti-caries properties, inhibiting the growth of cavity-causing bacteria and preventing the formation of dental plaque.
Insecticides: It acts as a repellent or insecticide against pests such as mosquitoes, flies, cockroaches, and ants. Formulations containing linalool can be applied to the skin or sprayed into the environment to provide mosquito and insect protection.
Plant Defense: Plants—such as the tea tree—release linalool when subjected to insect infestation; acting as a signaling molecule, it triggers defensive mechanisms while simultaneously exerting a toxic effect on the pests.
Deodorizers: Linalool binds with odor-causing substances in the air, demonstrating effective deodorizing capabilities; it can be utilized to eliminate unpleasant odors in environments such as restrooms and refrigerators.
