N-[3-(Trimethoxysilylpropyl)butylamine] is an organosilicon compound with the chemical formula C₁₀H₂₅NO₃Si. Its molecular structure contains both an active amine group and a hydrolyzable siloxane group, exhibiting both organic and inorganic reactivity, and it belongs to the silane coupling agent category.

As a functional additive, N-[3-(Trimethoxysilyl)propyl]butylamine has wide applications in materials science. It can build a “molecular bridge” between inorganic materials (such as glass, metal oxides, and mineral fillers) and organic polymers (such as resins and rubber), significantly improving the interfacial bonding between them. Therefore, it is often used in the surface treatment of glass fibers, the modification of inorganic fillers, and the preparation of polyurethane sealants to improve the mechanical strength, water resistance, and corrosion resistance of composite materials. Function

In the manufacture of glass fiber reinforced composites (such as fiberglass and engineering plastics), N-[3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl]n-butylamine is often used as a surface treatment agent for glass fibers. It effectively improves the interfacial bonding between glass fibers and the resin matrix, thereby significantly enhancing the tensile strength, flexural strength, and interlaminar shear strength of the composite material. Especially in humid environments, this modified composite material still maintains good mechanical properties. Furthermore, it is widely used for the surface modification of inorganic fillers such as silica, kaolin, and talc, improving the dispersibility and compatibility of these fillers in polymers, thus enhancing the overall performance of the filled material.

This substance is an important additive in polyurethane (PU) sealants and modified polyurethane (SPUR). In the synthesis of polyurethane prepolymers, it can act as a capping agent, reacting with isocyanate groups to adjust viscosity and reduce free isocyanate content, thereby improving the storage stability and application performance of the sealant. In the coatings and adhesives industry, it is often added to formulations as an adhesion promoter. Utilizing its silicon-based bonding ability with substrates and its amino-based reactivity with resins, it can effectively improve the adhesion of coatings to inorganic substrates such as metals and glass, and enhance the coating’s water resistance, corrosion resistance, and scrub resistance.

N-[3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl]n-butylamine can be used for the pretreatment of inorganic mineral fillers. Through a chemical reaction, it forms an organosilicon-modified layer on the filler surface, changing the filler’s surface properties from hydrophilic to oleophilic. This modified filler is more easily wetted and coated by organic resins, reducing filler aggregation in the resin, thereby improving the processing performance of the filling system and the physical and mechanical properties of the final product.
