Vinyltriisopropoxysilane is an organosilicon compound containing both vinyl and isopropoxy functional groups. As a functional silane coupling agent, its molecular structure incorporates both an organic functional group (vinyl) and inorganic functional groups (isopropoxy), enabling it to act as a molecular bridge between organic polymers and inorganic materials. This significantly enhances the mechanical properties, water resistance, and weatherability of composite materials.

Compared with commonly used vinyltrimethoxysilane and vinyltriethoxysilane, the isopropoxy groups in Vinyltriisopropoxysilane provide greater steric hindrance, which significantly slows the hydrolysis rate of the Si–O bonds. This characteristic gives the compound excellent stability in waterborne systems, allowing it to be used at relatively high loading levels (e.g., up to 10%) in emulsion polymerization without readily causing gelation or premature crosslinking. As a result, it is widely used in high-performance waterborne coatings, adhesives, and flame-retardant systems for wire and cable applications.

Function

Vinyltriisopropoxysilane is an important monomer for the production of high-performance waterborne coatings, such as silicone-acrylic emulsions. During emulsion polymerization, its slow hydrolysis rate, resulting from the isopropoxy groups, allows the system to remain stable even at addition levels of up to 10%, minimizing the risk of coagulation. It significantly improves the water resistance, stain resistance, and weatherability of coatings, making it widely used in exterior architectural coatings, wood coatings, and anti-corrosion coatings for metal substrates. In addition, it serves as an effective crosslinking agent for adhesives, enhancing bond strength.

In the plastics and rubber industries, Vinyltriisopropoxysilane is commonly used as a coupling agent and crosslinking agent. It is suitable for the surface treatment of inorganic fillers such as glass fibers, calcium carbonate, aluminum hydroxide, and magnesium hydroxide. Surface modification with this silane significantly improves the mechanical properties, electrical performance, and moisture resistance of composite materials. It is particularly valuable in halogen-free flame-retardant cable compounds, where it effectively modifies flame-retardant fillers such as magnesium hydroxide and aluminum hydroxide, reducing particle agglomeration and thereby improving flame-retardant efficiency and processing performance.

In addition to these primary applications, Vinyltriisopropoxysilane is also used for moisture-resistant surface treatment of electronic components. By forming a protective film on the surface, it enhances the reliability of encapsulation materials. It also serves as an intermediate in the synthesis of certain organosilicon pharmaceutical products.
