Industrial water treatment: This is the largest application area for HEDP. It is widely used in circulating cooling water systems in industries such as power, chemical, metallurgy, and fertilizer, as well as in medium and low-pressure boilers and oilfield water injection pipelines.

In the dyeing and finishing industry, HEDP is used as a stabilizer and fixing agent for hydrogen peroxide. It chelates metal ions in water, preventing color spots on fabrics and improving whiteness and color vibrancy. It can also be used as a cleaning agent for both metals and non-metals.

In the electroplating industry, HEDP is the main ingredient and complexing agent in cyanide-free copper plating solutions. It forms stable complexes with copper ions, resulting in a smooth, brightly colored, and well-bonded plating layer. Immersing the workpiece in a 1%–2% HEDP solution before use activates the surface and improves plating quality.

HEDP can also be used as a carrier (complexing agent) for radioactive elements, playing a role in tumor examinations (such as bone scans) and the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid and kidney diseases.

In everyday chemical products, it is used as an additive for water softening and formula stabilization.

In the electronics industry, high-purity solid HEDP is used in cleaning agents to remove oxides from metal surfaces. Additionally, it can be used as a concrete retarder in the building materials industry.
