Function
Benzenesulfonylimide compounds possess the general properties of sulfonylimides. The electron-withdrawing effect of the two sulfonyl groups facilitates the dissociation of the hydrogen atom on the nitrogen atom, resulting in some acidity and solubility in alkaline solutions.
In electroplating, it is used as a substitute for saccharin, a primary brightener, offering good leveling effects and requiring less saccharin.
It can also be used in the preparation of fluorinating agents.
Bisbenzenesulfonylimides are prepared by reacting benzenesulfonyl chloride with benzenesulfonamide.
