Dextran gel G-100 is a bead-like gel containing a large number of hydroxyl groups, which readily swells in water and electrolyte solutions. G-type dextran gels exhibit varying degrees of cross-linking, resulting in differences in their swelling degree and fractionation range. The swelling degree of dextran gels is largely unaffected by the presence of salts and detergents. Dextran gel G-100 is available in different particle sizes. Ultrafine dextran gels are used for column chromatography and thin-layer chromatography requiring extremely high resolution. Coarse and medium-sized gels are used in preparative chromatographic processes, achieving high flow rates at lower pressures. Additionally, coarse grades can also be used in batch processes.

Function
Dextran gel is insoluble in all solvents (unless chemically degraded). It is stable in water, salt solutions, organic solvents, alkalis, and weakly acidic solutions; however, in strong acids, the glycosidic bonds in the gel backbone are hydrolyzed. Prolonged exposure to oxidants will destroy the gel and should therefore be avoided. Dextran gel does not melt and can be sterilized in a wet state at neutral pH or in an autoclave at 120°C for 30 minutes without affecting its chromatographic properties. Dry gels will begin to caramelize when heated above 120°C. The mechanical strength of dextran gel depends on its degree of cross-linking.
