Sodium molybdate is an inorganic salt composed of a transition metal element, the alkali metal sodium, and the non-metal oxygen; it is a white crystalline powder widely utilized in fields such as pigments and chemical manufacturing. This substance is a low-toxicity, irritant compound; therefore, appropriate protective gear must be worn during its production and handling.

Function

1. Used as a reagent for the synthesis of alkaloids and other substances; also employed in the production of dyes, Molybdenum Red pigments, catalysts, and molybdenum salts, as well as a precipitant for light-fast lake pigments. Furthermore, it serves as an essential trace element for both plants and animals.

2. Molybdates function as corrosion inhibitors for anodic oxide films. They exert their anti-corrosive effect by forming a passivating film—composed of ferrous and ferric molybdenum oxides—on anodic iron surfaces. Consequently, they serve as environmentally friendly metal corrosion inhibitors for cooling water systems. Moreover, sodium molybdate acts as an effective corrosion inhibitor in both aerobic and anaerobic environments.

3. Used as an analytical reagent for the determination of alkaloids and phosphorus. It also finds application in the dye and pharmaceutical industries, as well as in the preparation of culture media. It is utilized to determine the total phosphorus and available phosphorus content in phosphate fertilizers (such as superphosphate), and to analyze protein-free blood filtrates and serum proteins. It serves as a corrosion inhibitor. Additionally, in the field of haploid breeding, it is used to formulate various culture media, including H medium, T medium, Modified Nitsch medium, MS medium, and RM medium.

4. Also utilized as an additive in zinc plating and as a polishing agent. In cyanide-based zinc plating processes, the combined use of sodium molybdate and heliotropine imparts an excellent bright finish to the plated coating. However, adding an excessive amount may result in a coating that is bright but brittle.
