Polyvinyl methyl ether (PVME) is a 50% aqueous solution originally manufactured by BASF under the trade name LUTONAL M40. It is a soft, saponification-resistant resin used to enhance the elasticity and adhesion of printing inks, nitrocellulose, and resin-based coatings. As a solvent-free polymer, it possesses a glass transition temperature of approximately 49°C. It also functions as a non-ionic surfactant, film-forming agent, water-retention agent, and hair-styling agent. Furthermore, it finds application in the pharmaceutical sector, serving as an intermediate in the synthesis of important antibiotics; it can be utilized as a buffering agent, acts as a plasticizing resin, and serves as an adhesion promoter.
