Theanine—chemically known as N-ethyl-γ-L-glutamine—is a unique free, non-protein amino acid found specifically in tea leaves. It was first isolated and identified in 1950 by the Japanese scientist Yaijiro Sakato from Gyokuro tea. Theanine constitutes approximately 1% to 2% of the dry weight of tea leaves; it is the most abundant free amino acid in tea, accounting for roughly 50% to 60% of the total free amino acid content.
