Vinyltrimethoxysilane (chemical formula C₅H₁₂O₃Si, CAS No. 2768-02-7) is a significant organosilicon compound classified as a silane coupling agent. Its molecular structure features one vinyl group and three methoxy groups; this unique bifunctional structure endows it with the capability to react with hydroxyl groups on the surfaces of inorganic materials (such as glass, metals, and fillers), while simultaneously possessing the reactivity to undergo grafting or copolymerization reactions with organic polymers (such as polyethylene, unsaturated polyesters, and acrylates).

KH-171
This constitutes the largest application market for vinyltrimethoxysilane. It is primarily utilized in the manufacture of silane-crosslinked polyethylene (PEX) pipes, as well as insulation layers for wires and cables. Once crosslinked, polyethylene exhibits exceptional heat resistance (capable of sustained use at 80°C for 50 years), creep resistance, resistance to environmental stress cracking, and superior electrical insulation properties; consequently, it is widely employed in pipelines for conveying hot and cold water, wire and cable sheathing, and as a protective layer for corrosion prevention and thermal insulation.
In glass fiber-reinforced plastics (FRP), carbon fiber-reinforced plastics (CFRP), and mineral-filled plastics, this substance serves as a surface treatment agent for glass fibers or mineral fillers. The treatment significantly enhances the interfacial adhesion between the inorganic materials and the resin matrix, thereby substantially improving the composite material’s tensile strength, impact strength, and interlaminar shear strength, while also enhancing its moisture resistance.
As an adhesion promoter, it is incorporated into acrylic coatings, polyurethane coatings, and sealants. It significantly improves the adhesion of coatings to substrates such as glass and metal, thereby preventing paint film peeling and chalking. Furthermore, in one-component moisture-curable polyurethanes (MS polymers), it functions as a highly efficient water scavenger, extending the shelf life of the adhesive by consuming trace amounts of moisture present within the system.
It is also utilized to modify silicone resins for the preparation of silicone materials with specialized properties; in the rubber industry, it serves as an adhesion promoter for bonding vinyl silicone rubber to metals or fabrics; and it is employed in the surface moisture-proofing treatment of electronic components to protect integrated circuits (chips) from damage caused by humid environments.
