Dimethyl silicone oil is a polymer characterized by an inorganic siloxane backbone and methyl side chains; at room temperature, it exists as a colorless liquid and is insoluble in water. The extensive utility of dimethyl silicone oil is attributed to its wide viscosity range (spanning from 0.65 to 1,000,000 mm²/s), low viscosity-temperature coefficient, high coefficient of thermal expansion, high flash point, and exceptional resistance to extreme temperatures, weathering, chemical corrosion, and radiation. Furthermore, it possesses low surface tension, high dielectric strength, and excellent shear stability.

Methyl silicone oil is widely utilized as a spin finish for raw fibers and raw cotton, as a processing aid for spinning operations, and as a smoothing agent for sewing threads. The spin finishes used for raw fibers and raw cotton typically consist of low-viscosity methyl silicone oil, whereas the smoothing agents for sewing threads employ medium-to-high-viscosity methyl silicone oil. Leveraging its excellent thermal stability and low viscosity-temperature coefficient, dimethyl silicone oil serves as a key raw material for manufacturing spin finishes; these are primarily employed in the spinning processes of nylon and polyester to prevent filament breakage and fraying.
Due to its low surface tension, insolubility in water, animal and vegetable oils, and high-boiling-point mineral oils—combined with its excellent chemical stability and non-toxic nature—dimethyl silicone oil is widely used as a raw material for defoamers. By blending dimethyl silicone oil with fumed silica, a silicone paste is produced; this paste is then emulsified to create water-based silicone emulsion defoamers. Silicone defoamers have found extensive application across various industries—including petroleum, chemicals, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, food processing, textiles, printing and dyeing, and papermaking—where the addition of a mere 10 to 100 parts per million (PPM) is sufficient to achieve effective defoaming results.
Furthermore, capitalizing on its non-stick properties relative to materials such as rubber, plastics, and metals—as well as its ability to readily form a protective film—it is utilized in the manufacture of mold release agents for the molding and processing of various rubber and plastic products.
It is also employed as a lubricant for rubber and plastic bearings and gears. Lubricants formulated with dimethyl silicone oil are typically utilized in the form of lubricating greases.
Leveraging its high flash point, odorless, colorless, and transparent nature, as well as its non-toxicity to humans, it serves as a heat transfer medium in oil baths or thermostats within industrial sectors—such as steel, glass, and ceramics manufacturing—as well as in scientific research settings. Moreover, thanks to its excellent shear resistance, it is suitable for use as hydraulic fluid, particularly in aviation hydraulic systems. When applied to rayon spinnerets, it effectively eliminates static electricity and enhances the quality of the spun filaments.
