Benzotriazole (BTA), with the chemical formula C₆H₅N₃, is a nitrogen-containing heterocyclic organic compound. At room temperature, it appears as white to pale pink needle-like crystals; while it possesses excellent thermal and chemical stability, it is prone to oxidation and turning red upon exposure to air. As a multifunctional chemical, benzotriazole plays a significant role in industrial production, serving primarily as a metal corrosion inhibitor, water treatment agent, stabilizer for polymer materials, photographic antifogging agent, and intermediate in organic synthesis.

As a highly efficient metal corrosion inhibitor, benzotriazole offers exceptional rust-prevention properties for copper and its alloys, finding widespread application in anti-rust oils and greases, cutting fluids, antifreeze, and industrial circulating water systems. In the field of polymer materials, it is frequently used as a UV absorber or light stabilizer to prevent plastics and coatings from aging and yellowing due to ultraviolet exposure. Additionally, benzotriazole serves as an antifogging agent in color developers, preventing fog formation on photosensitive materials and ensuring image quality. Metal rust prevention is the primary application area for benzotriazole. It is widely used as a highly effective corrosion inhibitor for copper and its alloys, as well as silver and its alloys. When added to rust-preventive oils and greases, it facilitates the storage and protection of metal products, preventing discoloration and rusting during processing. In machining operations, adding it to cutting fluids prevents copper components from discoloring during the manufacturing process. Additionally, benzotriazole serves as an additive in automotive antifreeze to protect copper components within engine cooling systems; it is also used to manufacture vapor-phase rust-inhibiting paper, which releases protective vapors via sublimation into the packaging space to provide long-term rust protection for copper products.

In industrial circulating cooling water systems, benzotriazole is frequently employed as a corrosion inhibitor. It inhibits galvanic corrosion of carbon steel caused by copper ions in the water and prevents corrosion in copper alloy heat exchangers. It is typically used in combination with other scale inhibitors and biocides (such as bactericides and algaecides) to achieve enhanced synergistic effects.

In the field of photography, benzotriazole is primarily used as an antifoggant and stabilizer. In color developers, it acts as a restrainer to prevent fogging and ensure image quality. Furthermore, it is used to prevent the fading of diazo dyes and to protect light-sensitive or discoloration-prone materials such as paper, film, and metal coins.

It is a crucial intermediate in the synthesis of various pharmaceuticals. For instance, its derivatives are used to synthesize peptide coupling agents (such as HBTU and TBTU), which are widely applied in the synthesis of peptide drugs and vaccines. Additionally, it is used to synthesize drug molecules that exhibit anti-cancer and antibacterial activities.
