Methyldimethoxysilylpropyl isocyanate is an organosilane coupling agent containing an isocyanate group. The compound’s molecular structure contains both an isocyanate group (-N=C=O) and a dimethoxymethylsilyl group (-Si(OCH₃)₂CH₃), enabling it to react chemically with organic polymers and form strong bonds with inorganic material surfaces. As an important surface modifier, methyldimethoxysilylpropyl isocyanate is widely used in composite materials, adhesives, sealants, coatings, and inks. Compared to common trimethoxysilanes, the methyl substituent introduced into its molecule enhances hydrophobicity and steric hindrance, thereby improving its hydrolytic stability and endowing modified materials with better water resistance, weather resistance, and chemical corrosion resistance.

Function
In the manufacture of glass fiber reinforced plastics (FRP) and other inorganic filler-filled composites, methyl-(3-propyl isocyanate)dimethylsilane is often used as a coupling agent and reinforcing agent. It can penetrate the surface of inorganic fillers, forming strong chemical bonds with the filler surface using silane groups. Simultaneously, its isocyanate groups can chemically react with resin matrices such as polyester, polyurethane, and epoxy resins, thereby significantly improving the mechanical strength, impact resistance, and water resistance of the composite material.
This compound is an important crosslinking agent and adhesion promoter in one-component moisture-curing polyurethane adhesives and sealants. During the curing process of the adhesive, the isocyanate groups react with trace amounts of moisture in the air to form urea bonds, while the silane groups hydrolyze and condense to form a siloxane network. This dual crosslinking mechanism enables the adhesive to achieve high-strength adhesion and sealing. Furthermore, the methyl groups introduced into its molecule help improve the weather resistance and aging resistance of the adhesive.
As a surface treatment agent, methyl-(3-propyl isocyanate)dimethylsilane can be used for surface modification of substrates such as metals, glass, and ceramics. It effectively reduces the surface energy of the substrate, improving the adhesion, corrosion resistance, and hydrophobicity of the coating. In water-based coatings and ink systems, it is also used as an adhesion promoter, helping to improve pigment dispersion, prevent pigment sedimentation, and enhance the adhesion of the paint film to the substrate.
