1,2-Bis(trimethoxysilyl)ethane (BTMSE) is an organosilicon compound with a bissilane structure. Its molecular structure contains two trimethoxysilyl groups linked by ethylene groups. This unique molecular design gives it higher reactivity and crosslinking density than ordinary monosilane coupling agents. In practical applications, BTMSE can hydrolyze to form a bissilanol structure, which then forms stronger covalent bonds with hydroxyl groups on the surfaces of inorganic materials such as metals and glass, significantly improving the adhesive strength, water resistance, and durability of the materials. It is widely used in adhesives, sealants, composite materials, and metal surface treatment, and is an important silane coupling agent and crosslinking agent.

Function
BTMSE can be used as an environmentally friendly, phosphorus-free, and heavy metal-free surface treatment solution, replacing traditional phosphating and passivation processes. After hydrolysis, it forms a uniform and stable silane film on the metal surface, significantly improving coating adhesion and corrosion resistance. Compared to traditional processes, BTMSE treatment does not generate phosphorus or heavy metal pollutants, meeting modern environmental protection requirements and is widely used in the pretreatment of metal parts in the automotive and home appliance industries.
In the production of adhesives and sealants, BTMSE is often used as a crosslinking agent, providing moisture-curing functionality. Due to the presence of two silane groups in its molecular structure, it significantly increases the crosslinking density of the adhesive layer, thereby greatly improving the bonding strength and moisture resistance of adhesives to various substrates such as glass, ceramics, metals, and plastics. It is particularly suitable for high-performance building sealants and industrial adhesives.
In the field of composite materials, BTMSE, as a coupling agent, effectively improves the compatibility between inorganic fillers (such as glass fibers and mineral fillers) and organic polymer matrices. It can form a protective silicone film on the filler surface, enhancing interfacial bonding and significantly improving the mechanical strength, weather resistance, and thermal stability of composite materials. It is an indispensable additive in the manufacture of high-performance composite materials.
Besides the above-mentioned areas, BTMSE can also be used to modify silicone rubber, acting as a crosslinking agent to improve its elasticity and durability, particularly in electronic packaging and medical devices. Furthermore, it is used to improve the hardness, weather resistance, and adhesion of silicone coatings, as well as for improving the toughness of aerogels and in the preparation of aerogels. In the field of nanotechnology, BTMSE is also used for the surface functionalization modification of nanoparticles to improve the dispersibility of nanomaterials in organic matrices.
