p-Aminobenzoic acid (PABA), also known as 4-aminobenzoic acid, is an important organic compound with the chemical formula C₇H₇NO₂. At room temperature, it appears as white needle-like crystals or a crystalline powder, slightly soluble in cold water, and readily soluble in hot water, ethanol, ether, and other organic solvents. As an important precursor for folic acid synthesis in organisms, p-aminobenzoic acid has wide applications in pharmaceuticals, dyes, and daily chemical products. It was once a common ingredient in sunscreen products, but due to its potential to cause allergies, it has gradually been replaced by derivatives.

Para-aminobenzoic acid (p-aminobenzoic acid) is an important intermediate in the synthesis of many drugs. It is a key raw material in the synthesis of folic acid (vitamin B9), which is essential for cell division and growth. Furthermore, ester-based local anesthetics such as procaine contain p-aminobenzoic acid structures. It is also used in the synthesis of procoagulant drugs such as p-carboxybenzylamine and anti-tuberculosis drugs, among other drugs.

In the dye industry, p-aminobenzoic acid is used in the synthesis of azo dyes and reactive dyes, serving as an important building block in organic synthesis. Additionally, it is used in the preparation of resin modifiers and analytical reagents.

P-aminobenzoic acid and its derivatives (such as Padimate O) were once widely used as sunscreens, absorbing UVB ultraviolet radiation. However, due to its skin irritation and sensitization properties, and the potential generation of free radicals, its use in modern sunscreen products has gradually decreased, with modified derivatives or other safer sunscreens being used instead.
