1,2-Benzisothiazolin-3-one (abbreviated as BIT) is a highly effective, broad-spectrum biocide and preservative belonging to the isothiazolinone class. As an organic heterocyclic compound, BIT features a molecular structure containing both a benzene ring and an isothiazolinone ring; it exhibits excellent thermal and chemical stability, maintaining its activity even under high temperatures and in strongly alkaline environments. This substance exerts its biocidal and preservative effects by disrupting the normal metabolic processes of microorganisms—specifically by inhibiting their intracellular enzyme systems and reacting with thiol-containing proteins.

BIT is one of the most important “in-can preservatives” in the industrial sector. It is widely utilized in products such as water-based paints, adhesives, latex, metalworking fluids, and paper pulp. The addition of BIT effectively prevents contamination by bacteria, mold, and yeast during product storage and transportation, thereby averting issues such as mold growth, fermentation, emulsion breakdown, foul odors, and viscosity changes.
In the agricultural sector, a derivative of BIT—Thidiazuron—serves as a broad-spectrum, systemic fungicide. It demonstrates excellent efficacy in controlling both fungal diseases (such as downy mildew, anthracnose, and canker) and bacterial diseases across a wide variety of crops. Thidiazuron not only directly eliminates pathogens but also regulates crop growth and enhances the plants’ resistance to environmental stress.
BIT is also frequently incorporated into daily chemical products (such as shampoos and laundry detergents) to serve as a preservative, thereby extending the products’ shelf life.
In the field of water treatment, BIT is employed in industrial circulating cooling water systems and oilfield water injection systems to inhibit the proliferation of microorganisms—such as algae and sulfate-reducing bacteria—and to prevent the formation of biological slime.
