Carbon black is a product obtained from the incomplete combustion or thermal decomposition of carbon-containing materials (such as coal, natural gas, and heavy oil) under insufficient air conditions, with carbon as its main component. As an important nanomaterial, carbon black is a loose, lightweight, extremely fine black powder with a very large specific surface area. Carbon black possesses excellent rubber reinforcing, coloring, electrical conductivity or antistatic properties, and ultraviolet absorption functions, and is widely used in rubber, plastics, inks, coatings, batteries, and other fields. The rubber industry is the largest consumer of carbon black, accounting for over 90% of total production, primarily used in tire manufacturing to significantly improve the wear resistance and physical and mechanical properties of rubber products.
Carbon black for rubber is mainly used to reinforce rubber and improve its physical and mechanical properties. Internationally, it is typically named according to ASTM standards, such as the N series (normal vulcanization rate) and the S series (slow vulcanization rate). Common grades include N110 (ultra-abrasion furnace black), N220 (medium-ultra-abrasion furnace black), N330 (high abrasion furnace black), N550 (fast-pressing furnace black), and N660 (general-purpose furnace black), etc.

The rubber industry is the largest market for carbon black, accounting for over 90% of total consumption. As a reinforcing agent, carbon black is widely used in rubber products such as tires (tread and sidewalls), belts, hoses, and rubber shoes, significantly improving their abrasion resistance, tensile strength, and tear strength.
In the ink industry, carbon black is a primary raw material for black printing inks, requiring high blackness and good flowability. In the coatings industry, carbon black is used as a black pigment, possessing excellent weather resistance and anti-aging properties, and is widely used in automotive topcoats and decorative paints.
In plastics, carbon black is mainly used as a colorant and UV shielding agent, and also imparts electrical conductivity to plastics. Plastics filled with carbon black exhibit better rigidity, hardness, and corrosion resistance.
Carbon black is also used in dry-cell batteries, carbon-based products, electrical components, hard alloys, printing and dyeing, and electrostatic photography.
