Nanodiamonds (NDs)—also known as ultradispersed diamonds (UDD)—refer to diamond particles with a size range of 1 to 100 nanometers. As a novel class of carbon nanomaterials, nanodiamonds seamlessly combine the intrinsic properties of diamond with the unique characteristics of nanomaterials. They not only retain diamond’s exceptional hardness (Mohs hardness of 10), outstanding thermal conductivity (reaching up to 2000 W/(m·K)), and excellent chemical stability, but also possess a large specific surface area and high surface activity at the nanoscale.

Function

Lubrication and Wear Resistance:When added to lubricants as an additive, nanodiamonds fill microscopic irregularities on friction surfaces to form a solid lubricating film. This significantly reduces the coefficient of friction and minimizes wear, thereby extending the service life of engines, mechanical transmission systems, and similar components.

Ultra-Precision Polishing:Leveraging their exceptional hardness and nanoscale dimensions, nanodiamond polishing slurries can reduce the surface roughness of optical lenses, hard drive read/write heads, semiconductor chips, and similar items to an atomic level, achieving a mirror-like finish.

Composite Materials:Incorporating nanodiamonds as a filler into metal, ceramic, or polymer matrices significantly enhances the composite material’s hardness, thermal conductivity, and wear resistance. Such composites are utilized in the manufacture of high-performance cutting tools and heat dissipation devices.

Catalysis:Due to their large specific surface area, nanodiamonds serve effectively as catalyst supports; alternatively, they can be doped with metal or non-metal atoms to create non-metallic catalysts. They demonstrate excellent catalytic activity in clean energy conversion reactions, such as electrocatalytic oxygen reduction and water splitting for hydrogen production.

Stealth Materials:Owing to their unique electronic structure, nanodiamonds exhibit excellent absorption properties for electromagnetic waves. They can be utilized to fabricate stealth coatings and wave-absorbing materials, finding applications in military equipment and electromagnetic shielding technologies.
