2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is a biomass-derived organic compound classified as a furan-derivative platform chemical. Its molecular structure comprises a rigid furan ring and two carboxyl functional groups; this endows it with chemical properties remarkably similar to those of the petroleum-based chemical terephthalic acid (PTA), while simultaneously offering exceptional biodegradability, superior gas barrier properties, and excellent thermal stability.

The most commercially valuable application of FDCA is its use as a substitute for terephthalic acid (PTA) and ethylene glycol (EG) in polymerization reactions to produce polyethylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate (PEF).
FDCA can be polymerized with various diamine monomers (such as hexamethylenediamine) to produce high-performance bio-based polyamides (nylons). Compared to traditional nylons, FDCA-based polyamides exhibit superior thermal stability, mechanical strength, and barrier properties; furthermore, they possess excellent biocompatibility, making them suitable for the manufacture of engineering plastics, fibers, and film materials. Additionally, FDCA can be utilized to synthesize bio-based polyurethanes (PU), which find extensive application in the fields of coatings, adhesives, and elastomers.
In the realm of fine chemicals, FDCA ester derivatives serve as ideal substitutes for phthalate plasticizers. These derivatives are non-toxic and bio-based in origin; they effectively enhance the flexibility and processability of materials such as PVC and are widely employed in applications with stringent safety requirements—including wires and cables, medical tubing, and toys.
In the pharmaceutical sector, FDCA and its derivatives have demonstrated a certain degree of antimicrobial activity, suggesting potential for their development as antimicrobial agents. Moreover, as a potent chelating agent, FDCA is currently being investigated in medical contexts for its potential utility in facilitating the removal of kidney stones.
