Potassium methylsilicate is an alkaline aqueous solution produced by the reaction of methylsilicic acid and potassium hydroxide. It belongs to the category of organosilicon waterproofing agents. This substance is typically a colorless or pale yellow transparent liquid, strongly alkaline, non-flammable, and miscible with water.
As a novel rigid building waterproofing material, potassium methylsilicate is widely used for waterproofing the surfaces of minerals such as stone, concrete, bricks, and ceramics. Its core function lies in forming a water-insoluble network of polymethylsilicate film on and within the substrate through a chemical reaction. This film possesses excellent hydrophobicity, breathability, and weather resistance, effectively preventing water penetration, reducing peeling caused by freeze-thaw cycles, thereby extending the service life of the substrate while maintaining its original natural appearance. Furthermore, it can also be used as an additive to water glass or as a shale inhibitor in oil drilling.

Potassium methylsilicate is a commonly used rigid waterproofing material in construction engineering, suitable for the protection and repair of various mineral building materials. In concrete engineering, it is widely used for waterproofing and damp-proofing basements, bathrooms, roofs, and walls, as well as for seepage prevention and freeze-thaw resistance treatment of concrete pavements, bridges, and tunnels. For stone and brick surfaces, it can be used for the protection of marble, granite, ceramic tiles, and red bricks, preventing water stains, efflorescence, and weathering, and also providing stain resistance and anti-aging effects. Furthermore, it is often used for waterproof impregnation of lightweight insulation materials such as perlite, gypsum board, and glass wool to reduce water absorption and increase strength.
Beyond the construction field, potassium methylsilicate also has specific industrial applications. It can be used as an additive in chemical products such as water glass, latex paint, and 107 glue to improve their water repellency and water resistance. In the wood processing industry, potassium methylsilicate can be used for wood preservation and moisture-proofing, thereby extending the service life of the wood. In the oil drilling field, potassium methylsilicate can also be used as a shale inhibitor. Its anionic components can adsorb onto the edges and corners of clay particles, changing the surface of the clay particles from hydrophilic to hydrophobic, thereby inhibiting the hydration and swelling of the clay and maintaining wellbore stability.
