Hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) is a non-ionic, water-soluble polymer derived from natural cellulose through chemical modification. It typically appears as a white or pale yellow fibrous or powdery solid and is odorless and non-toxic. As a significant cellulose ether derivative, HEC exhibits excellent properties such as thickening, suspending, binding, emulsifying, film-forming, and water-retention capabilities. Compared to other cellulose ethers, it is resistant to precipitation in high-concentration electrolyte solutions and remains stable across a wide pH range; consequently, it is widely used in numerous fields, including petroleum extraction, coatings, construction, pharmaceuticals, personal care products, and papermaking.

In the construction industry, hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) serves primarily as an additive for mortar and concrete. It significantly enhances water retention in mortar, preventing cracking and strength loss caused by rapid moisture evaporation, while also improving workability for easier application and spreading. In the coatings sector, it acts as a key thickener for latex paints and “real stone” paints, providing excellent rheological properties, preventing pigment settling, and improving storage stability.
HEC is an indispensable chemical in the petroleum industry. In drilling fluids, it functions as a fluid-loss control agent, effectively regulating water loss and stabilizing the borehole wall. In fracturing operations, it acts as a viscosifier, increasing the viscosity of fracturing fluids to transport proppants deep into the formation and enhance crude oil recovery. Its superior temperature and salt resistance make it particularly suitable for high-temperature, deep-well operations.
In the pharmaceutical field, HEC is widely used as a binder, disintegrant, and coating material for tablets, as well as a thickener for eye drops, ointments, and gels. Due to its excellent biocompatibility, it is frequently used to formulate hydrophilic gel matrix tablets for sustained drug release. In the food industry, it serves as a thickener, stabilizer, and suspending agent in products such as ice cream, jams, and beverages, improving mouthfeel and texture.
In the personal care and household products sector, HEC is a vital ingredient in shampoos, body washes, toothpastes, and lotions. It imparts desirable rheological properties and skin feel, while enhancing product stability and spreadability. In toothpaste specifically, its shear-thinning characteristic ensures the paste is easy to squeeze out yet remains stable without running once in the mouth.
Beyond these sectors, HEC finds extensive application in industries such as papermaking (surface sizing agents, retention aids), textiles (sizing agents, finishing agents), ceramics (reinforcing agents), and metal casting (sand mold binders), where it functions as a thickener, binder, and protective colloid.
