Lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF₆) is a white crystalline or powdery inorganic compound. It is a core component of lithium-ion battery electrolytes, accounting for over 40% of the total electrolyte cost, and is often referred to as the “blood” of lithium-ion batteries. Lithium hexafluorophosphate possesses excellent ionic conductivity and electrochemical stability, enabling efficient lithium-ion conduction between the positive and negative electrodes, thus ensuring high voltage, high specific energy, and long cycle life of the battery.

Currently, its industrial production mainly employs the hydrogen fluoride solvent method, which involves dissolving lithium fluoride in anhydrous hydrogen fluoride and reacting it with phosphorus pentafluoride gas. Although lithium hexafluorophosphate has drawbacks such as poor thermal stability and easy hydrolysis to form hydrofluoric acid, its excellent overall performance and relatively low cost make it the most widely used lithium salt in commercial lithium-ion battery electrolytes. With technological advancements, novel lithium salts such as lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI) are gradually becoming potential alternatives.
