Dodecane (a mixture of isomers), commonly known as isododecane, is a highly branched synthetic hydrocarbon mixture, primarily composed of C₁₂ alkane isomers. As an environmentally friendly industrial and chemical solvent, it is colorless, odorless, has low viscosity, low surface tension, and high volatility. Compared to traditional straight-chain alkanes, its branched structure gives it better low-temperature fluidity and solubility, and it contains almost no aromatics or sulfur, making it harmless to humans and readily biodegradable. Isododecane is widely used in skincare products, cosmetics, industrial cleaning agents, coatings, and inks, often as a substitute for volatile silicone oils or as a carrier for organic solvents.
Dodecane (a mixture of isomers) refers to a mixture of various branched alkane isomers with the molecular formula C₁₂H₂₆, commonly known as isododecane. In industrial and commercial applications, the name “isododecane” is often used to distinguish it from straight-chain n-dodecane. This mixture is typically produced through isomerization of petroleum fractions or oligomerization and hydrogenation of olefins, exhibiting a highly branched structure. Due to its unique molecular structure, isododecane displays excellent physicochemical properties, making it a high-performance, environmentally friendly solvent.

Physicochemical properties
Isododecane is a clear, colorless, and odorless liquid. Its density is approximately 0.75 g/mL (25℃), its boiling point is typically between 215-217℃, and its melting point is approximately -9.6℃.
Volatileness: It has a moderate evaporation rate, between that of n-alkanes and cyclic solvents, and leaves no oil stains or white marks after drying.
Solubility: It has good solubility for non-polar substances (such as oils and waxes) and excellent compatibility with esters and silicone oils.
Surface Tension: It has a low surface tension (approximately 23-25 mN/m), close to that of silicone oils, which gives it excellent wetting and spreading properties in formulations.
Stability: It is chemically stable, resistant to oxidation, acids, and alkalis, contains almost no aromatics or sulfur, and has good thermal stability.
The preparation of isododecane mainly relies on petrochemical processes. Common preparation methods include:
Petroleum fraction isomerization: Converting straight-chain alkanes into branched-chain alkanes under the action of a catalyst to improve their octane number and low-temperature fluidity.
Olefin oligomerization and hydrogenation: Generating C12 olefins through oligomerization reactions of olefins such as isobutylene, followed by hydrogenation saturation to obtain highly branched alkanes.
Deep refining: Processing through deep hydrogenation desulfurization, dearomatization, and denitrogenation to ensure the product is low in sulfur, low in aromatics, non-toxic, and odorless.
Isododecane is an ideal raw material in cosmetics and skincare products, commonly used in various makeup products (such as foundation, mascara, and lip gloss), sunscreens, makeup removers, and hair care products.
Improved Skin Feel: As a volatile carrier, it provides a refreshing, non-greasy feel, improving the spreadability and texture of products.
Silicone Substitute: Due to its rapid evaporation and silky feel, it is often used as an environmentally friendly alternative to volatile silicone oils.
Solubilization and Solubilization: It effectively dissolves oils and waxes, improving compatibility between different systems, and is suitable for anhydrous or alcohol-water systems.
In the industrial field, isododecane is used as a metal cleaning agent, a cleaning agent for precision electronic components, and a degreasing agent for optical lenses.
Environmentally Friendly Alternative: It can replace environmentally harmful solvents such as Freon for cleaning metal parts of household appliances, LCD screen surfaces, and electroplated parts.
Highly Effective Degreasing: It has excellent degreasing capabilities, leaves no residue after evaporation, and does not corrode metal surfaces.
Coatings and Inks: Used as a thinner for fast-drying inkjet inks and metallic coatings, improving coating leveling and drying speed.
Adhesives: Used as a plasticizer for pressure-sensitive adhesives and hot melt adhesives, adjusting viscosity and open time.
Aerosols: Can be used as a propellant or solvent for aerosols, exhibiting good compatibility with fragrances.
