Hinokitiol—also known as β-hinokitiol—is a naturally occurring monoterpenoid tropolone derivative with the chemical name 4-isopropylcyclohepta-1,3,5-trien-1-ol. This substance was first isolated and identified by Japanese scientists in 1948 from the trunk of the Taiwan cypress (*Chamaecyparis obtusa* var. *formosensis*); it has garnered significant attention due to its distinctive woody aroma and remarkable biological activity.

Hinokitiol is widely distributed among plants of the Cupressaceae family—such as the Japanese cypress (*Chamaecyparis obtusa*) and the Taiwan cypress—and serves as one of the primary constituents of their essential oils. As a botanical ingredient with a high safety profile, hinokitiol exhibits excellent antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and moisturizing properties. It demonstrates particular efficacy in inhibiting melanin production and treating acne, leading to its widespread application in cosmetics, daily chemical products, and the pharmaceutical sector. Furthermore, research has revealed that it exerts a potent inhibitory effect against various pathogenic bacteria, including *Staphylococcus aureus*.

Function

Daily Chemicals and Cosmetics: Leveraging its whitening, anti-acne, antibacterial, and moisturizing properties, it is widely incorporated into products such as face creams, lotions, and body washes. For instance, skincare sets formulated with hinokitiol blends can be utilized to control oil production, suppress acne, and diminish red marks.

Pharmaceuticals and Hygiene: As a highly safe plant-derived antibacterial agent, it is employed in the manufacture of hygiene products—such as antibacterial sprays and hand sanitizers—and also serves as a pharmaceutical intermediate.

Agriculture: Its derivatives demonstrate significant potential within the field of biopesticides, where they can be utilized to prevent and control crop diseases.
