Polyvinylamine (PVAM) is a water-soluble, highly cationic polymer. It is hygroscopic, soluble in water and ethanol, but insoluble in benzene. Its aqueous solution is cationic and gels in the presence of acid. PVC has high reactivity, reacting with the hydroxyl groups in cellulose to cross-link and polymerize, giving paper wet strength and dry strengthening properties. The presence of any acid, alkali, or aluminum sulfate will affect its wet strength and retention. It is mainly used as a wet strength agent for unsized absorbent papers (such as filter paper, blotting paper, and toilet paper), but its paper damage is difficult to handle. Furthermore, it can accelerate pulp filtration and facilitate the flocculation of fine fibers in white water. It has a strong binding force to acid dyes and can be used as a fixing agent when dyeing paper with acid dyes. It can also be used to treat cellophane, reducing wetting deformation. PVC can also be used for fiber modification, printing and dyeing auxiliaries, ion exchange resins, and coagulation and sedimentation (metal capture, wastewater treatment), etc.

Function

1. High Adhesion and Adsorption: The amine group can react with hydroxyl groups to form hydrogen bonds, with carboxyl groups to form ionic bonds, and with alkyl groups to form covalent bonds. Simultaneously, due to its polar group (amine) and hydrophobic group (vinyl) structure, it can combine with various substances. Utilizing these combined binding forces, it can be widely used in adhesives, inks, coatings, and bonding agents.

2. High Cationicity: It exists in water as a polycation, capable of neutralizing and adsorbing all anionic substances. It can also chelate heavy metal ions. Utilizing its high cationicity, it can be applied in papermaking, water treatment, electroplating solutions, and dispersants.

3. High Reactivity: Due to its high reactivity, it can readily react with epoxy resins, aldehydes, isocyanate compounds, and acidic gases. Utilizing this reactive property, it can be used as an epoxy resin modifier, aldehyde adsorbent, and dye fixative.
