Polyethylene Oxide (PEO) is a crystalline, thermoplastic, water-soluble, non-ionic polymer. Its chemical structure consists of repeating ethylene oxide units and is typically synthesized via the ring-opening polymerization of ethylene oxide. PEO exhibits unique pseudoplastic rheological behavior: it displays extremely high viscosity at low shear rates, yet its viscosity decreases rapidly at high shear rates. This characteristic enables it to produce a significant thickening effect even at very low concentrations. Depending on its molecular weight, PEO can manifest as a viscous liquid, a waxy solid, or a white powdery solid; among these forms, high-molecular-weight PEO (typically with a molecular weight exceeding 1 million) constitutes the primary form utilized in industrial applications.
