Zinc sulfide is an important inorganic compound classified as a II-VI group compound semiconductor material. In nature, it commonly occurs in the form of sphalerite, which serves as a primary ore of zinc. Zinc sulfide exhibits various crystal polymorphs, the most common of which are the cubic sphalerite structure and the hexagonal wurtzite structure. As a wide-bandgap semiconductor, zinc sulfide demonstrates excellent optical transmittance across the visible and infrared spectral regions, coupled with a high refractive index; consequently, it finds extensive application in fields such as infrared optical window materials, optical thin-film coatings, and light-emitting devices. Furthermore, owing to its relatively low Mohs hardness, high chemical stability, and non-toxic nature, zinc sulfide also serves as a high-quality white pigment and plastic filler, frequently utilized as a substitute for titanium dioxide to enhance the wear resistance and dispersibility of materials.

Widely utilized in the fabrication of infrared windows, domes, lenses, and filters, finding applications in military and civilian sectors such as infrared imaging, night vision equipment, and guidance systems.
Particularly well-suited as a filler material for plastics (e.g., PP, PBT), rubber, and coatings. Compared to traditional titanium dioxide, the use of zinc sulfide significantly enhances the toughness and impact strength of composite materials while maintaining excellent whiteness.
Zinc sulfide serves as a key luminescent material; by doping it with elements such as manganese (Mn) or copper (Cu), it can be formulated into phosphors that emit green or yellow light, used in the manufacture of Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) displays, Electroluminescent Devices (ELDs), and X-ray fluorescent screens.
Zinc sulfide can also be employed as an additive in solid lubricants to enhance the high-temperature stability of friction materials.
In the ceramics industry, its excellent sintering properties are leveraged to manufacture high-performance ceramics.
In the agricultural sector, it is utilized as a trace element fertilizer.
