Cycloastragenol (CAG) is a tetracyclic triterpenoid compound extracted from the roots of *Astragalus membranaceus*—a traditional Chinese medicinal herb—and serves as the aglycone form of astragalosides (such as Astragaloside IV). As the only currently validated telomerase activator among natural products, cycloastragenol attracts significant attention in the field of anti-aging research; it functions by activating telomerase activity to induce telomere elongation, thereby delaying the process of cellular senescence. Furthermore, cycloastragenol exhibits a diverse range of pharmacological activities, including immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects, as well as cardiovascular protection and the promotion of wound healing. In recent years, driven by advancements in bioengineering technologies, the heterologous synthesis of cycloastragenol has been successfully achieved through metabolic engineering in yeast, opening up new avenues for its large-scale application.
