3-Isocyanatopropyltriethoxysilane (IPTS) is an organosilicon compound with the chemical formula C₁₀H₂₁NO₄Si. Its molecular structure incorporates two distinct chemical groups: the isocyanate group (-NCO) and the triethoxysilane group (-Si(OEt)₃). This unique structure endows it with both the high-temperature resistance and weather resistance characteristic of organosilicon materials, as well as the high chemical reactivity associated with isocyanate groups.

Isocyanatopropyltriethoxysilane serves as an excellent surface treatment agent for glass fibers (GF) and inorganic fillers. In the manufacturing of glass fiber-reinforced plastics (FRP), it effectively improves the wettability of the glass fiber surface and enhances the interfacial bonding strength between the glass fibers and resin matrices—such as unsaturated polyesters, epoxy resins, and polyurethanes. FRP products treated with this coupling agent exhibit superior interlaminar shear strength, flexural strength, and resistance to humid-heat aging; consequently, the agent is widely utilized in fields such as wind turbine blades, automotive components, and construction materials.
Due to the exceptional compatibility of its isocyanate functional group with polyurethane resins, isocyanatopropyltriethoxysilane is frequently incorporated into polyurethane sealants and adhesives as an adhesion promoter or crosslinking agent.
