Ammonium polyphosphate (APP) is a significant inorganic polymer. Serving as a high-performance, non-halogenated flame retardant and an efficient raw material for fertilizers, APP is characterized by being non-toxic and odorless, possessing high thermal stability, and generating no corrosive gases. Depending on its degree of polymerization, APP is classified into three types—oligomeric, medium-polymeric, and high-polymeric—and is widely utilized in fields such as fire-retardant coatings, plastics, polyurethane foams, wood products, and liquid agricultural fertilizers.

APP finds extensive application in the fields of fire protection and flame retardation. It serves as the core component of intumescent fire-retardant coatings and is widely utilized for the fire protection of structures such as steel frameworks, tunnels, and cables. In the plastics and rubber industries, it is frequently employed to impart flame retardancy to materials such as polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyurethane (PU), and polystyrene (PS), enabling these materials to achieve the UL94 V-0 rating. Furthermore, the incorporation of APP into rigid polyurethane foams significantly enhances both their flame retardancy and dimensional stability without compromising the foam’s thermal insulation properties.
Polyphosphates of ammonium with specific degrees of polymerization serve as essential raw materials for the formulation of liquid and water-soluble fertilizers. As a high-concentration source of phosphorus, APP is utilized in the production of liquid compound fertilizers. Due to its chelating properties regarding metal ions, foliar fertilizers formulated with APP are less prone to precipitation reactions when mixed with pesticides and remain safe for crops. Moreover, given its excellent water solubility, it is particularly well-suited for integrated water-and-fertilizer drip irrigation systems, where it helps to improve fertilizer utilization efficiency and reduce environmental pollution.
