L-arginine is a chemical substance; following recrystallization from water, it loses its water of crystallization at 105°C. Its aqueous solution exhibits strong alkalinity, and it is capable of absorbing carbon dioxide from the air. It is soluble in water (15% at 21°C), insoluble in diethyl ether, and slightly soluble in ethanol. While considered a non-essential amino acid for adults—albeit one produced relatively slowly within the body—it is an essential amino acid for infants and young children; it also possesses certain detoxifying properties. It is found in abundance in substances such as protamines and serves as a fundamental constituent of various proteins; consequently, it is widely distributed throughout nature.

Nutritional Supplements: Arginine is a key component of the ornithine cycle and performs extremely important physiological functions. Consuming arginine can increase the activity of arginase in the liver, thereby facilitating the conversion of blood ammonia into urea for excretion. Consequently, arginine is beneficial in the management of conditions such as hyperammonemia and hepatic dysfunction.
L-arginine is also a primary constituent of sperm proteins; it serves to enhance sperm quality and boost sperm motility.
Arginine effectively boosts immunity by stimulating the immune system to secrete endogenous substances—such as natural killer (NK) cells, phagocytes, and interleukin-1—thereby aiding in the fight against cancer cells and the prevention of viral infections. Furthermore, arginine acts as a precursor to L-ornithine and L-proline; since proline is a vital element in the composition of collagen, arginine supplementation offers significant therapeutic benefits during recovery from severe trauma or burns—conditions requiring extensive tissue repair—while simultaneously helping to reduce the risk of infection and inflammation.
Arginine has demonstrated beneficial effects in ameliorating certain forms of nephropathy resulting from elevated renal pressure, as well as specific instances of urinary difficulty. However, as arginine is an amino acid, it may potentially impose a metabolic burden on patients suffering from renal failure; therefore, individuals with severely impaired renal function are strongly advised to consult with their attending physician prior to using this supplement.
