DOP is the most important plasticizer used in the processing of flexible polyvinyl chloride (PVC) products. The addition of DOP during the PVC processing stage significantly lowers the polymer’s glass transition temperature, rendering the material soft, elastic, and easy to process.
It is widely utilized in the manufacture of various products, including films, artificial leather, floor coverings, hoses, cable sheathing, plastic footwear, toys, and gaskets.
It also serves as an excellent softener for synthetic rubbers (such as nitrile rubber and neoprene). It reduces rubber viscosity, enhances processing flowability, and improves the physical and mechanical properties of vulcanized rubber—specifically by boosting cold resistance, resilience, and tear strength. Consequently, it is extensively employed in the production of items such as rubber hoses and rubber sealing strips.
Furthermore, it finds widespread application in the coatings, inks, and adhesives industries, where it functions as a solvent or plasticizer to enhance the flexibility and adhesion of paint films.
