Polyethyleneimine (abbreviated as PEI—also known as polyaziridine) is a water-soluble polymer that appears as a colorless or pale yellow viscous liquid. It is soluble in water and ethanol, exhibits hygroscopic properties, but is insoluble in benzene and acetone; it forms a precipitate upon contact with sulfuric acid having a pH below 2.4. Its aqueous solutions carry a positive charge, and the addition of formaldehyde induces flocculation. It possesses low chemical toxicity. It reacts readily with electrophilic reagents and can be chemically modified via amine-based reactions; furthermore, it demonstrates excellent affinity and adsorption capabilities toward anionic substances. Commercial products are typically supplied as aqueous solutions with concentrations ranging from 20% to 50%.

1. Primarily used as a wet-strength agent for unsized absorbent papers (such as filter paper, blotting paper, tissue paper, etc.); however, the resulting broke (waste paper) is relatively difficult to process. Furthermore, it accelerates pulp dewatering and facilitates the flocculation of fine fibers within the white water. It exhibits strong binding affinity for acid dyes and can serve as a fixing agent during the acid-dyeing of paper. It can also be used to treat cellophane, thereby reducing deformation caused by wetting. Additionally, polyethyleneimine finds applications in fiber modification, textile printing and dyeing auxiliaries, ion-exchange resins, and flocculation and sedimentation processes (e.g., metal scavenging and wastewater treatment).
2. Used as a wet-strength agent for unsized, breathable papers; it also functions as a retention aid and a beating aid during the papermaking process, helping to reduce pulp freeness (beating degree). It enhances the paper web’s dewatering efficiency, resulting in a 1% to 4% increase in paper dryness and a 5% to 20% increase in production capacity.
3. This product is a non-ionic polymer; however, in acidic media, it acquires cationic properties. It is suitable for various applications, including wastewater treatment and serving as a retention and drainage aid in papermaking.
