Polyethylene resin (PE) is a thermoplastic resin produced by the polymerization of ethylene monomers. As one of the five major general-purpose plastics, PE resin is the world’s largest producer and consumer of synthetic resins due to its excellent low-temperature resistance, chemical stability, electrical insulation, and relatively low cost. It typically appears as milky white or translucent granules with a waxy feel and is insoluble in common solvents at room temperature.

PE resin has a wide range of properties and applications. Based on different polymerization methods, molecular weights, and densities, it is mainly classified into low-density polyethylene (LDPE), linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE), medium-density polyethylene (MDPE), and high-density polyethylene (HDPE). It is widely used in packaging, agriculture, construction, electronics, automotive, and daily necessities, and is an important raw material for manufacturing films, containers, pipes, wires and cables, and other consumer goods.

Function

Film is the largest application area for polyethylene, accounting for over 40% of total consumption. LDPE is mainly used for food packaging, shopping bags, and agricultural films; LLDPE and HDPE are widely used in heavy-duty packaging films, stretch films, wrapping films, and industrial packaging, utilizing their excellent tensile properties and tear resistance to protect goods.

Utilizing the rigidity and strength of HDPE, injection molding is widely used to produce turnover boxes, trash cans, bottle caps, containers, automotive parts (such as bumpers and dashboards), and toys. Hollow containers produced through blow molding, such as mineral water bottles, cooking oil drums, and detergent bottles, are lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and easily recyclable.

Polyethylene pipes have excellent corrosion resistance and flexibility, and are widely used in municipal water supply, drainage, gas transmission, and agricultural irrigation. Furthermore, polyethylene is the preferred material for the insulation and sheathing layers of wires and cables, possessing good insulation properties and resistance to environmental stress cracking.

In agriculture, polyethylene mulch film is used to cover the soil, retain moisture and heat, and promote crop growth. In the industrial sector, ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) is used to manufacture mechanical components such as bearings, gears, and wear-resistant liners due to its extremely high wear resistance and self-lubricating properties.
