N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) is a colorless to pale yellow transparent liquid with a slight amine odor. It is a highly polar aprotic solvent. Its chemical formula is C₅H₉NO, and its molecular weight is 99.13. The properties of NMP, such as high boiling point, strong polarity, low viscosity, strong solubility, good chemical stability, and relatively low toxicity, are questionable. It is miscible with water and most organic solvents in any proportion.

The electronics and new energy sectors are currently the largest consumer market for NMP, especially in lithium-ion battery manufacturing. In battery production, NMP is used as a solvent for positive electrode active materials (such as lithium cobalt oxide and ternary materials) and binders (such as PVDF). It effectively dissolves PVDF and adjusts slurry viscosity, ensuring uniform coating. With the explosive growth of new energy vehicles, demand in this field continues to surge. Furthermore, high-purity NMP (electronic grade) is also used in semiconductor manufacturing for photoresist removal, precision instrument cleaning, liquid crystal display (LCD) production, and printed circuit board (PCB) cleaning, utilizing its strong dissolving power to remove oil and residues.
In the industrial and chemical sectors, NMP is an excellent extraction solvent used to separate and recover butadiene from cracked C4 hydrocarbons, recover isoprene from cracked C5 hydrocarbons, and concentrate acetylene from naphtha cracking gas. It exhibits high solubility for aromatics and low vapor pressure, resulting in high recovery rates and low losses. In petroleum refining, NMP is used to extract aromatics from lubricating oils to improve their viscosity index and antioxidant properties, replacing traditional solvents such as phenol and furfural. Simultaneously, NMP is also a key solvent and reaction medium in the synthesis of high-performance engineering plastics such as polyphenylene sulfide (PPS), polyimide (PI), and polyamide (aramid), widely used due to its ability to dissolve these poorly soluble polymers.
In addition to the above applications, NMP can also be used as a solvent in pharmaceutical synthesis, a pesticide adjuvant, a dye dispersant, a solvent for PVC tail gas recovery, and an industrial cleaning agent.
