Polyethylene oxide (PEO) is a crystalline, thermoplastic, water-soluble, nonionic polymer. Its chemical structure consists of repeating ethylene oxide units, and it is typically produced by ring-opening polymerization of ethylene oxide. PEO exhibits unique pseudoplastic rheological behavior, meaning it displays extremely high viscosity at low shear rates, while its viscosity rapidly decreases at high shear rates. This characteristic allows it to produce a significant thickening effect even at very low addition amounts. Depending on its molecular weight, PEO can exist as a viscous liquid, a waxy solid, or a white powder, with high molecular weight PEO (typically above 1 million) being the primary form used in industrial applications.
